This Is Where I Leave You

Just started reading this book on Friday and I'm almost done!  It's witty, hilarious and very moving, all at the same time.   Reminds me a lot of the TV show Arrested Development (very very funny!).  It's about a very dysfunctional family that is called to sit shiva after the death of their father.  Highly recommend it!

Are you reading anything at the time?  Any good book you would recommend for my next one?

  1. My book club just finished two books that I really enjoyed: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. I also highly recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (if you haven't already read it).

Warning: all of the above made me cry.

  2. Just came across your blog. I finished reading Trust your Eyes by Linwood Barclay. He is a great author.

  3. I read a ton but what kind of genre do you enjoy. I'm kind of a low brow reader so you won't get any fancy pants books recs from me. My typical favorite reads are around David Balacci, Daniel Silva, Michael Connoly, Vince Flynn type novels. I loved Life from Scratch written by the Stirrup Queens gal Melissa Ford. It was a fun easy read and didn't even know when I got it off Amazon's Daily Deal awhile back that it was the Stirrup Queen's book until after reading it. There's a small bit in it about infertility which was written so well and accurate and later it makes sense why it was when connecting the author to her blog.

  4. Oooooh, love Arrested Development! I'm totally going to buy this. I actually read a fantastic book a couple months ago called The Sense of An Ending, but Julian Barnes. Not sure if you've read any of this other stuff, but this one is short and packs a punch. Pretty intense, but easy to read. Look into it!

    1. Just read the reviews, I'll order it right now. No, never read anything of his but I'm interested now. Thanks!! And BTW, I met Michael Apted at the premier of 56UP!, I had no idea he was going to show up. Really cool guy. He did Q&A and loved how candid he was.

  7. Thanks so much for the recommendation. I read a ton and am always looking for great books. If you haven't read Gone Girl, it was really good. Had me hooked the whole time. Also read The Night Circus recently...although it was harder to get into, it was still entertaining. And I'm reading Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me...love her stuff. I laugh out loud! But my fave of hers is "Are You There Chelsea It's Me Vodka".

    1. I read "Are you there Chelsea" a few years back, she's funny and Gone Girl is on my list! Thank you! You've given me the push to get it.

  8. I <3 Augusten Burroughs except for his latest "This is How". It's only just ok, but he went with a different style this time around. Similar to David Sedaris, but better IMHO.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson is good - a twisted humor, dysfunctional type memoir.

For something more serious, A Thousand Splendid Suns is excellent. Fictional story about 2 women's lives in the middle east during war time.

Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend was great, but don't know if some people TTC would want to read it.(???) It's from the perspective of an imaginary friend of a little boy with Asperger's that has something scary happen to him.

I wasn't a big fan of Gone Girl. There was a bit about IVF in there that really pissed me off, but it wasn't the only reason I didn't like it. Loads of people loved it though.

Right now I'm reading a book that I think the original TV show Bones was predicated on, but based on some things in the first 3 pages it's probably NOT good for most TTC people to read.

I just realized that I read some pretty weird stuff. Promise I read normal things too.

  9. Hi dearie, long time no comment! I have been in survival mode for the last month or so, and am totally behind on blogging/reading blogs. I am SO glad that things are continuing to progress for you - and I just cannot wait until this all comes together!

In terms of books, I loved Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel. It won the Booker Prize, and it's historical fiction about Thomas Cromwell, Henry VII, Anne Boleyn and all of the Tudor stuff that makes for such fascinating reading. I will check out this book as well!

    Thinking of you...
